Read an explanation of the Bookshelf Rating system here. (Not that you would…but I just have to say.) Recommended read? Meh Recommended for analysis? No Bookshelf Rating? Please don’t look at the happenings in the Selection as the ultimate love story. It’s messy, unhealthy, hurtful, and it is just a bad idea. To all teen boys and girls out there: I strongly advise you not to form intimate physical and/or emotional ties with more than one person at a time. They are pretty, that’s for certain.Īnd if everyone will forgive me for being preachy for a second, I just have to say: It’s neither a must-read nor something to avoid. I would say it’s a good “turn off your brain and just enjoy it” read…but for the ick factor.īut not everyone has the same ick-meter as I do, so do with that what you will.įinal notes: Nothing objectionable….or stellar, noteworthy, or despicable about the books. It was only ever yours to break anyway.”īesides occasionally fluffy and wonderful lines like this one and other fantasy-fulfilling scenes (slow dancing in the rain, anyone?), there is really nothing worthwhile about the Selection series.

Pithy and full of feels and just wonderful. Ugh, that is just good stuff right there. It was only ever yours to break anyway.” ( One) Maxon was fine, I suppose, but I don’t understand why so many people count him as an ultimate book-boyfriend, or say AmericaxMaxon are relationship goals. And sometimes she was just stupid when it was supposed to come off as brave and noble and awesome or whatever. But her actions in her romantic relationships were so unhealthy, it was like she was two different people when interacting with her love interests and with her platonic relationships. She was kind and supportive and smart, and I rooted for her to keep her head held high. Her interactions with other female characters were great. I did like America-when she wasn’t with Prince Maxon. The characters were basic YA story fodder.

Seeing America string two guys along without making a decision and keeping most or all of her relationship with the one secret from the other was…icky.Īnd I know that these elements are basically the premise of the entire series but…ick. Watching Maxon “date”–emotionally connect with, make out with, confide in, etc-multiple girls at the same time was…icky. Even though I was sort of entertained while reading these…there was an underlying ickiness marring the experience. It was the same ickiness that surrounds ABC’s The Bachelor/ette (which, yes, I have seen a little bit of). I would explode!Īnyway, that’s just to give you context as to my opinions on “dumb books” before I get into the Selection.Įven though I was sort of entertained while reading these-and I obviously kept reading through all three of them-there was an underlying ickiness marring the experience, particularly in the second book ( Elite). (Looking at you, Cindy Antsy! Keep them coming!) What can I say? I can’t read Brandon Sanderson and Laini Taylor and Ruta Sepetys all day every day. I am a proud lover of “dumb books” that don’t often get featured on this website because they’re dumb but I love them. There’s a place for all kinds on a bookshelf. However, I do value stories that are purely for entertainment. Honestly, there’s nothing to these books. The first three are a coherent trilogy, and the final two are a sequel duology focusing on the children of the couple in the trilogy. *There are technically five books in the series. Because there’s not a lot of substance to these books, I am just doing a quick review for all three books together. I read the Selection trilogy* within a thirty-six hour period. And Crown Prince Maxon isn’t who she thought he’d be. She wants to marry Aspen, her childhood love who is a caste below her.īut then she is Selected. America Singer is from a middle caste and doesn’t want to marry the prince.
